Literary Agents     List of Categories

  • What is the role of a literary agent?

A literary agent has 3 import roles to perform: find a publisher, negotiate the contract and help the writer to develop their manuscript.

An agent sells your work to a publisher. The agent receives payment from a publisher and subtract commission and expenses and forwards the remainder to you.

  • I have read sources which state that agents do receive a commission on the advance and I have read sources that state that agents do not receive a commission on the author's advance. Which is correct?

The normal practice is for the literary agent to receive a commission for all fees paid to the author. This includes advances as well as royalties. Don't worry, a literary agent does a lot of work for you and deserves every penny.

  • I found an agent. The problem is he wants to charge me to read my manuscript. What is the normal rate for these charges?

Run very quickly away from that agent! Literary agents usually generate 98-100% of there income from commissions not from reading your manuscripts.

This means when your books get sold they get paid (or if you receive an advance from a publisher, they get paid).

Keep in mind reputable agents may charge you for office expenses like long distance, phone calls, postage etc., but usually not to read your manuscript.
