What is an advance?
An advance is a sum of money paid to an author before a book is published. It is usually paid in installments after the author signs a book contract.
Keep in mind an advance by definition is an advance on royalties. This means an author will not receive additional royalties until the publisher's profits exceed the advance. If book sales do not exceed the advance this may be the only money you will receive for your book. Thank goodness the advance is not repayable should your book bomb!

I have a nonfiction book I've just written. What is the best way to find a publisher?
Most nonfiction books are sold by using book proposals. This is quite different than fiction books which usually involve sending a query letter and your manuscript.
The proposal usually describes what your book is about, who the audience is, an overview, an outline, author's bio, and sample chapters. One of the most important components is why you think the book will sell to the target market.

I want to send my manuscript to a publisher. Do I send the original or a copy?
You should always send photocopies of your manuscript. Editors cringe when they see that a writer has sent the only copy of the manuscript.
A good idea is to send a self addressed stamped postcard with your submission. That way an editor can let you know quickly if they are not interested.

I'm looking for publishing houses in Australia, currently accepting manuscripts. I've shown my manuscript to several friends and they all love it. How do I find a publisher?
The best way for you to find a publisher in Australia is to go to your local bookstore and browse the books that are similar in content to yours. If you can't find a book similar, that is a clue that a publisher may not have done a similar book because it is not marketable.
